Amid reports of an impending deal between striking Hollywood writers and major film studios, the writers union has reached an interim agreement with four leading indie film companies based in New York, it was announced Sunday. Although no deal has been announced with major studios, one is in the works, according to several Los Angeles-area media outlets. Several Los Angeles-area radio stations reported a breakthrough in the negotiations late Saturday night. The Los Angeles Times reported in its Sunday editions that a deal is all but done, and an agreement could be signed as early as this Friday. If ratified, an agreement means the show will go on at this year’s Oscars. The Feb. 24 Academy Awards telecast was in jeopardy after striking writers announced they would picket the ceremony.
In the meantime, the Writers Guild has signed an interim deal with GreeneStreet Films, Killer Films, Open City Films, and This is that corporation. “The interim agreements these companies have signed with the Writers Guilds are a reaffirmation of their dedication to great writing, bold innovation and good old-fashioned, New York City street smarts,” said Michael Winship, president of the Writers Guild of America, East. The agreement will allow the film companies to “resume business immediately,” the WGA said in a statement, but no specific details about the negotiations were announced. This breakthrough follows similar interim deals with other indie film companies such as The Weinstein Company, David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants and Tom Cruise’s United Artists. Writers put down their pens on Nov. 5 over issues including compensation for online video downloads and live Internet streaming.
